DIY Twin Bed Frame and Headboard

For the longest time, I've kept my boys' mattresses on the floor for safety. My oldest son was a sleep walker until he turned 6 in 2012, and my youngest is a rolly polly sleeper and was constantly ending up on the floor. It worked well for us for a really long time and I didn't have to worry about them falling out of bed and getting hurt during the night.

When the time finally came that they were ready for bed frames and headboards, I knew I wanted something custom. Another DIY project - hooray!!! :) After talking to the boys about what themes they would be happy with in their room, we decided on a beach/surfing/hang loose theme. FUN!

I got on Craigslist and searched for free wood and found someone who had about a kabillion pallets they needed to get rid of. I took way too many off their hands because I knew I'd use them for other things besides the beds.

Pallets are so fun and easy to work with! They really have that fun rustic beach house look that I was wanting. I chose some bright, beachy colors and had fun with the boys going to town on the headboards. We just used spray paint. You'll notice in the picture below I made my son strip down to undies so his clothes wouldn't become part of the project. Hee hee. They had sooo much fun helping!

I put a little white craft paint on a plate so Jamison could paint the wood in between the colored pieces.

I love that in these pictures you get to see my backyard at its worst before we spiffed it up. HA!

For the pallets that would make the frame, I just stacked them and painted the sides that would be showing. Then I had my strong hubby haul them up to the boys room to stack. You can see how I did it in the pictures below. I didn't nail them together because they were already sturdy enough and from what I could tell weren't going to be moving around without a lot of force.

Here are the finished beds. Super easy and definitely fits the theme. Very BOY! I will get the rest of the room done soon and post an update on the finished beachy/surfing/hang loose themed room!

Just a couple of warnings if you plan to do this. Make sure your kids understand these are NOT jumping beds! There are no springs. Also, wood from pallets can cause slivers if played with. I would definitely make sure to evaluate your child's maturity level before making these DIY beds. Make sure they understand they aren't to be played with....just enjoyed. DIY furniture from pallets are cheap, easy, and fun to work with and I've never personally experienced any injuries from them.
